Let's Study Latvian!
Latvian is the official language of the Republic of Latvia, member country of the EU. There are around 1.5 million native speakers of the language. 1.38 million live in Latvia with the rest living abroad in various countries. At least half a million inhabitants of other ethnic groups in Latvia use the language as the second one. Tens of thousands of people use it in neighboring countries, especially in Lithuania.
Latvian is Indo-European language. Its Baltic group of languages is formed by the Latvian, Lithuanian and Old Prussian. Latvian is close to Lithuanian, however native speakers of the both languages currently are unable to communicate freely. Latvian borrows some features from the Liiv language, which is closely related to Estonian. For example, the first syllable of the word usually is stressed. The influence of the Liiv language is found in the vocabulary of the Latvian language.
